Allaboutwriting - Courses with a difference

Allaboutwriting, a partnership between Richard Beynon and Jo- Anne Richards, has an exciting array of writing courses coming up in the next few weeks.
Beynon and Richards have developed a series of courses designed to inspire writers and to stimulate creativity allowing each writer to find their own individual voice.
The courses provide writers with a range of skills and techniques to translate their vision into publishable manuscripts.
The courses are open to anyone with a proposed writing project, even if it’s only the sketchiest idea at this stage, as well as to anyone who merely wishes to learn more about writing. They serve writers of fiction, non-fiction or even screenplays. Beginners are welcome.
The Character Course is a unique writing course devised and run by novelist Jo-Anne Richards, scriptwriter Richard Beynon and psychologist Pierre Brouard.
The Character Course blends psychology and writing to create a one-day plunge into the process of creating memorable and larger-than-life characters. It looks at the skills needed to make these characters leap off the page.
The workshop will be held on Saturday, February 27 in Parkview, Johannesburg from 9am to 5pm with lunch and refreshments included. This course, introduced to acclaim in 2009, costs R1500.
They say that there’s a book in each of us. More than likely this is your own story, but it could be you’d love to tell the story of someone else, living or dead, whose life has been an inspiration to you.
Most of us, though, lack the skills to turn a fascinating life into a fascinating book. Join Jo-Anne Richards and Fred de Vries on the three day Biography and Memoir Course and learn all you need to successfully tackle the writing of a biography or memoir. 6 and 7 March and 17 April. Cost: R4500.
The simplest romance takes a thorough understanding of the genre, and a complex set of skills. In other words, there’s more to a romance than meets the eye. The Romance Writing course is designed to show what rough magic lies behind the seamless romance of every good love story.
Held over six Wednesday mornings in March and April, the course takes you through practical skills, with fun and challenging exercises. Cost: R3600.
Richard Beynon and romance writer Alissa Baxter (author of three published romances) will guide you through the maze of what it takes to write a romance.
The Cape Town Creative Writing Weekend, run by Jo-Anne Richards and Richard Beynon, is a writing experience with a difference. Taking you out of your comfort zones, the course will encourage creativity, while teaching the literary skills that will enable you to write with flair and dynamism. 10 and 11 April 2010. Cost: R 3 750 which includes lunches, teas, coffees and snacks.
For more information including testimonials from past participants please visit www.allaboutwritingcourses.com and join Allaboutwriting on Facebook for regular updates.

Franschhoek Literary Festival

The Franschhoek Literary Festival: Fourth Edition will hit the streets of this Winelands village starting on Friday 14 May.

It will be another gathering of writers, editors, publishers, readers and assorted book fans who will be deep in various conversations – sometimes to applause and laughter, occasionally escalating to hot argument – until sunset on Sunday 16 May.

The FLF is a celebration of books and writers with the focus on promoting South African writing and reading, run largely by volunteers and well supported by the Franschhoek community.

The programme and the list of visiting writers are in the final stages of being confirmed, and some of the overseas writers who will be participating include:

- From Japan: bestselling French author Muriel Barbery, courtesy of the Alliance Francaise

- From Spain: John Carlin, author of the book about Madiba and the 1995 Rugby World Cup that Clint Eastwood turned into the movie Invictus

- From the UK, sponsored by the British Council: TV personality Tom Watt, Arsenal fanatic and author of The Beautiful Game, a book of soccer heroes

South African authors will include former FLF stars Ivan Vladislavic, Deon Meyer, John van de Ruit, Rian Malan, Chris van Wyk, Niq Mhlongo and Imraan Coovadia. This year we look forward to welcoming Jonathan Jansen, Mandla Langa, Jacob Dlamini, Michiel Heyns, Véronique Tadjo, Ndumiso Ngcobo, Mark Behr, Pieter Haasbroek, Aher Arap Bol and Angela Makholwa. Of special interest will be Wessell Ebersohn, pioneer writer of SA thrillers, who dropped out of sight for nearly twenty years and is now back with a new Yudel Gordon book, The October Killings.

Negotiations with other exciting writers – a number from Africa – continue. There will also be a cookbook discussion on Friday 14 May with three Ms of local cuisine: Marlene van der Westhuizen, Mark Dendy-Young and Myrna Robins.

The price of FLF tickets remains the same as last year: R60 per event, with concessions for students. Regular festival participants know that the proceeds of ticket sales and donations go into the FLF Library Fund which puts books into schools and crèches, with the long-term goal of achieving a new library to serve all communities in our valley. In three years the FLF has raised over R415 000 for the Fund.

‘The people shall read’ is the mantra of the 2010 Festival, starting with children. Your enjoyment of the FLF 2010 from 14 to 16 May will help to work towards this essential objective.

Details will be up on the website soon, with the programme due towards the end of February.

For further information, please refer to the FLF website, www.flf.co.za, or e-mail the helpline info@flf.co.za. For accommodation and general enquiries contact the Franschhoek Tourism office 021 876 3603 or go to www.franschhoek.org.za

Guardian of Light book launch

Durban author and veteran social activist and campaigner for peace and justice, Paddy Kearney, launches his book Guardian of the Light.

This is the first full autobiography about the astonishing life and phenomenal work of Archbishop Denis Hurley – one of the most significant Catholic leaders in South Africa in the second half of the twentieth century.

Huley was a courageous opponent of South Africa’s apartheid regime for 50 years, dubbed “an ecclesiastical Che Guevara” by a South African official and “guardian of the light” by Alan Paton. He was a champion of the reforms and “spirit” of Vatican II, who was controversial for his views on birth control, married priests, and women’s ordination.

Born in Cape Town in 1915 of Irish parents, the son of a lighthouse keeper, he was raised at various lighthouses on South Africa’s coast. He became the youngest Catholic bishop in the world in 1947 at 31 and Archbishop of Durban in 1951.

He first served as chairman of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference from 1952 to 1961. The conference issued in 1957 its first statement against apartheid, describing the system of enforced racial segregation as “inherently evil.” Eventually, along with four other church leaders (including Desmond Tutu), he was regarded as one of the South African state’s “most wanted” political opponents.

He retired as archbishop in 1992, becoming chancellor of the University of Natal from 1993 to 1998. He continued to work as a parish priest well into his eighties.

Auxiliary Bishop Jabulani Nxumalo of Durban recalled that in 1951 Hurley “was the first bishop … who openly expressed himself against apartheid and spoke in support of the rights of the blacks.”

“Denis Eugene Hurley was undoubtedly the most significant Catholic leader in South Africa during the twentieth century. Hurley had a profound effect upon the Church’s struggle against apartheid and played a major role in the process of renewing the Catholic Church. Tall and impressive, he was an eloquent speaker, years ahead of his time not only in his views on South Africa’s racial problems, but also on the reforms needed in the Catholic Church,” explained Kearney.

“To Hurley, apartheid was a form of organised evil, which he believed could only be overcome by organised good. Thus, in the 1970s, he established organisations that would help to bring about change. He founded Diakonia (1976), an ecumenical agency promoting action for justice and peace in the Greater Durban Area; initiated the Human Awareness Programme (1977) which strengthened civil society efforts; and supported the establishment in 1979 of PACSA (the Pietermaritzburg Agency for Christian Social Awareness). Through his contacts with leaders of other churches and other faiths, his ecumenical commitment grew ever stronger. The dynamic ecumenical movement in KwaZulu-Natal even now owes much to his pioneering efforts.

“Investigations by South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission found that Hurley was “one of the state’s most wanted political opponents and a target for dirty tactics because banning was not an option for such a high-level cleric,” Kearney said.
Author - Paddy Kearney:

Paddy Kearney was born in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, in 1942 where he went to school at St Charles’s Marist College. He has Bachelor’s degrees in Arts (Natal University) and Education (Witwatersrand University) and a Masters Degree in Education from Toledo, Ohio where he had a Fulbright Scholarship. He taught in secondary schools in Durban and Johannesburg and lectured in Education at Natal University. From 1976 to 2004 he headed the staff team at Diakonia, an ecumenical social justice agency founded by Archbishop Denis Hurley to help Durban churches respond to the socio-political challenges of the area. He is at present a consultant to the KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council. Kearney also serves as a trustee for Gandhi Development Trust (GDT) and as a board member for the International Center of Non-violence (ICON).

This is his third biography about the life and times of Archbishop Denis Hurley. The first is Vatican II – Keeping the Dream Alive, and Memories: The Memoirs of Archbishop Denis E Hurley OMI - Archbishop Hurley’s memoirs for the period 1915 to 1965, together with an account of the Archbishop’s last 38 years up to his death in 2004.

Messages of Support:

Archbishop Hurley was one of our greatest South Africans. This biography reveals what gave him that stature – his integrity, fearlessness, gentleness of spirit and his magnanimity. It is a must read for all of us.
The Most Reverend Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town.

Denis Hurley’s father was a lighthouse keeper, the guardian of the light that warms the sailors of dangers and guides them away from destruction. Our Archbishop has been doing this work of warning and guiding for the greater part of his life. And he has done it with great faithfulness.
Alan Paton, author of Cry, The Beloved Country
On the occasion of the Archbishop’s 70th birthday celebration.

This book not only provides a glimpse into South African history during the apartheid years but a vivid poignant story of a powerful yet humble man of God, committed to truth, justice and non-racialism. It should be read by every South African and many others too around the world, in order to understand our role as part of the human family.
Ela Gandhi – granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi
Chancellor of the Durban University of Technology

Denis Hurley was an inspiration. This champion in the fight against apartheid in South Africa was a bishop ahead of many of his people. Paddy Kearney is well placed to tell the inside story. His book throws fresh light on the lift and career of a great churchman.
John Wilkins. Editor: The Tablet

Archbishop Denis Hurley’s life of immense courage, deep spirituality and prophetic leadership deserves to be more widely known not only in South African but throughout the world.
Albert Nolan OP, author of God in South Africa.

This magisterial work was written with loving care by Paddy Kearney… Kearney’s account of Hurley’s struggle with Rome over ICEL, the International Commission for English in the Liturgy, is worth the price of the whole book… Julian Filochowski, director of CAFOD, a fight-hunger organization in the UK, called Hurley “the best cardinal Africa never had.”
Robert Blair Kaiser: National Catholic Reporter. Kaiser covered Vatican II for Time magazine.

The Denis Hurley Centre, Durban:

The Denis Hurley Centre is an initiative spearheaded by Durban’s Emmanuel Cathedral to transform and re-furbish a pre-WW1 building in the inner city, transforming it into an innovative outreach centre.

Situated on the corner of the busy Denis Hurley Street (Queen St) and Cathedral Rd in the heart of the city, the three storey Emmanuel Cathedral Parish Centre was built as a primary school shortly before the beginning of World War 1. Already much in use, the vision is to give this sturdy building a major upgrade, overhaul and facelift. It is a listed building, so the distinctive façade cannot be altered. The intention is to make the building more useful for the social service and educational objectives of the Cathedral.

The new building will be used to its optimum. It will house the Cathedral’s outreach and social responsibility programmes – including homeless support and feeding projects; refugee pastoral care; nursing / HIV / AIDS programme; a comprehensive counselling service; the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Free State Authors

Some notes here on key Free State Black Writers who have published books over the years and whose works number thousands in the public libraries….

OMOSEYE BOLAJI

Has contributed astonishingly to Free State Black Literature over the years. A key writer of fiction, poetry, drama, literary criticism, biography etc. He has pus published over 20 books including Impossible love, The ghostly adversary, People of the townships, the subtle transgressor, Tebogo and the Haka, Tebogo and the epithalamion among others. Omoseye Bolaji has received numerous awards for his contributions to African literature including a Lifetime Achievement Award, The Chancellor’s Medal (from the University of Free State) and a Chieftaincy title from the King of Ibadanland in Nigeria.

LEBOHANG THAISI

A poet, literary critic and essayist. His debut book, A Voice from Mangaung (a collection of poems) has been celebrated with many articles written on the work and published in journals nationally. Some of his essays on literature have also appeared internationally, including on the Internet. A sophisticated, well read lover of literature

KGOSIETSILE Dinthloane

A poet extraordinary whose works have been published all over the world, including Europe and USA. He is highly devoted to poetry of the highest quality and is not tolerant of what he believes in inferior in this wise. Known wildly as “The Bibliophile” – mainly because of his extraordinary knowledge of literature worldwide, his library of books is very impressive and embraces writers from every corner of the world. Also a critic who has published many discerning articles on artists and writers.

CHARMAINE KOLWANE

Achieved renown as the first black female in the Free State to publish a critical work (book) titled Omoseye Bolaji: Chanelling one’s thoughts onto paper. The book has been a critical success, available and discussed in world class tertiary institutions like Yale University, North Western University (USA), Cape Town University, Indiana University among others. Like other good writers, Charmaine reads a lot and has written hundreds of poems.

TEBOHO MASAKALA

An imaginative very young writer already making waves locally and nationally as a very good writer of short stories. Important articles on his literary work are already available in journals, and on the Internet. Teboho is a very unassuming g humble young man very much in love with creative writing. He admits that he still has a great deal to learn and has great respect for established writers like Saint George Vis and Flaxman Qoopane.

RICHARD SEAPE

Another young writer incredibly so much in love with poetry. He enjoys writing in Afrikaans, though his poems in English are also of the highest quality. Popularly known as “Skietreker” he has incredible passion for literature and already has hundreds of cuttings on world-wide literary articles, and write ups! Has already published a book of poems (in Afrikaans)

PULE LECHESA

He is the most respected black literary critic from the Free State. His two major books, Four Free State Authors and The Evolution of Free State Black Literature continue to be hits around the world. Pule loves the world of writing a lot, reads prodigiously (like Lebohang Thaisi) and has done a lot to put the Free State on the map with his connections with international literary figures who dominate the Internet and pertinent publications.

THABO MAFIKE

Dubbed “the perfect gentleman” by admirers, but he is also a formidable author, publisher and Sesotho writer. Has the distinction of writing and publishing the longest book locally – Tjhe Bo Bophelo. A prolific writer he has published about ten books including poetry, drama, children’s books, motivation etc. Also a pastor, Mafike is impressive with his suave decent character.

Neo Mvubu

For sheer talent and class, as a writer Neo Mvubu’s talents belong to the top drawer. As a female the sky seems to be the limit for her with her excellent diction, effortless writing ability and great potential (as she’s still in her early 20’s) Neo hit the scene by publishing dozens of poems in newspapers and magazines, and showing her clout as a fine journalist. Short stories written by her have been published in journals, books and on the Internet. Her main project now “is a novel; hopefully a majestic, powerful novel” she says.

SELEKE BOTSIME

There was a lot of hype when Seleke Botsime’s maiden book, Blasphemy was launched in 2009. Seleke, who fell in love with reading and writing as a youngster (like so many writers) has published scores of articles and columns in publications. He has been widely praised for his powerful writing style which incorporates a plethora of Biblical imagery and is often morally uplifting. He was named “Free State Columnist of the Year” for 2008. He already has an impressive national and international profile as can be ascertained from the Internet.

JOB MZAMO

Many literary pundits believe that Thamsanqa Job Mzamo is the most outstanding poet in the Free State. Apart from his prolificacy, his superb and inventive use of language and diction allied to imagery mark him out. Even most of his rhymes do not look forced or contrived. Mzamo is also the man behind Mzamo Poetics which has been boosting grassroots literacy (specifically poetry) over the years. Although other works have been expected from him, literary pundits for now are forced to concentrate all their attentions on his one known book, Pride of my heart (2001)

FLAXMAN QOOPANE

A man who fell in love with the world of writing whilst he was in exile outside South Africa, He has now published many books including lots of personal biography, and essays on literature. His books include A poet abroad, Memoirs of a Cultural Activist, City of Roses and Literary icons, The Conference

Would you like to read your work, launch your book, publication or newsletter?

We cordially invite you to participate in the first ever Jozi Book Fair, hosted at the Museum \Africa, Newtown, on the 8th August 2009. South Africa boasts a vibrant generation of young and emerging writers, activists and publishers. Unfortunately their work is hardly ever recognised by a wider audience in the region today. The Jozi Book Fair is a response to the urgent need to rebuild a progressive publishing movement on the continent, due to the recent decline of progressive and alternative publishers observed in South Africa and internationally.

If you would like to participate in this book fair, then send us your book, article, poetry, manuscript, journal or newsletter.

There will be a selection process and the chosen authors will be given a platform to showcase themselves and their work to a captive audience, including publishers and distributors.

All submissions must be accompanied by your full contact details, a copy of your ID and a letter of declaration stating that the submitted work is your own original work.

The Jozi Book Fair is organised by Khanya College and Botsotso Publishing to offer small and progressive writers and publishers a forum to showcase their publications and activites, network, as well as the opportunity to develop alternative approaches and strategies.

The aims of the book fair are to:

* Provide space for small, progressive publishers showcase their work

* Rebuild a progressive publishing network, especially of small publishers in the South and Southern Africa

* Develop a reading culture among the broad public, and in particular among South Africa’s poor communities

* Profile writers who are generally marginalised, non-mainstream writers and publications

* Stimulate / Encourage publishing within social movements and NGOs

*Stimulate and encourage publishing among and by women, and promote a publishing movement that deals with promoting a gender and feminist movement

* Provide information about publishing opportunities so as to stimulate new publishing initiatives

* Provide a platform for publishers and agents to network, debate, discuss, plan new projects

* Development of an alternative book trade and translations

* Promote indigenous language publishing
