On February 4, 2024, The South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator launched the South Africa: Platinum Centenary Commemoration, marking a Century of “Platinum Pre-eminence.”

This celebration aligns with the 30th year of freedom and democracy, emphasizing human rights and the transformation of society. It provides an opportunity for South Africans, the broader African continent, and the global community to unite in celebrating the remarkable South African journey and reflect on the socio-economic progress achieved since 1994.

In his state of the nation address, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged South Africans to celebrate the nation’s accomplishments. “We believe that these achievements must be showcased to the public, and those who have contributed to the realization of the South African principle of ‘Batho Pele’ should be recognized and awarded,” emphasized the President.

President Cyril Ramaphosa stated, “Just as we cannot deny the progress South Africans have made over the last 30 years, nor should we diminish the severe challenges that we continue to face.”

The South Africa: Platinum Centenary Commemoration marks a significant milestone, commemorating 100 years since the renowned geologist Dr. Hans Merensky discovered the Platinum-Group Metals deposits in the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) in 1924. This discovery marked a pivotal moment in South Africa’s mining industry.

The centenary in 2024 offers a timely opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Platinum Mining in South Africa, positioning the country as a global leader in platinum production. South Africa stands as the world’s top producer of platinum, a versatile metal used in various applications, from jewelry to catalytic converters, with the majority sourced from the Bushveld Igneous Complex.
